Councillor Cuc Lam
Having arrived in Australia as a refugee in 1978, the journey of adapting to a new country while also staying true to my roots resonates deeply with me.
My husband and I arrived with just one small red suitcase and have built a wonderful new life here for our family.
Beyond geographical relocation, migrants have to deal with challenges around language, navigating unfamiliar educational and employment landscapes, and enduring the absence of extended family during significant life events.
While this quest for a sense of “community” and “home” is very much a personal journey, it also contributes to the rich tapestry of diversity that defines our municipality, making it the vibrant place it is today.
Mixing with the rich vibrancy of cultural diversity is the reason I enjoy greeting our newest citizens at our monthly Citizenship Ceremonies which remind us how lucky we are to be living in such a peaceful and free nation.
It is also why I am deeply invested in the development of council’s first Intercultural Strategy.
Released for comment in late August, it reflects our dedication to embracing diverse voices.
While we are people from multiple cultures, collectively we create our own culture – a Maribyrnong culture – one that celebrates our points of difference, through understanding, supporting and listening to each other’s stories.
And it was heartening to hear all the positive comments reinforcing our community’s commitment also to inclusivity and embracing all that the many and varied cultures who have settled in our municipality have to offer.
As we continue along this pathway guided by community input, the vision is clear – a Maribyrnong that is not just a place on the map but a mosaic of diverse stories, interwoven into a thriving and inclusive community.
Culture gives us something to hold onto and feel proud of who we are.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete a questionnaire, online survey and postcard. The draft Strategy will be shared with the community for further feedback in 2024.
