Altona North’s Sue Kim Lim was among more than 16,000 people across the country who officially became Australian citizens on January 26.
Originally born in Malaysia, Sue has spent the last 11 years in Australia after initially coming here to study.
She said applying for citizenship was something she had wanted to do for a long time now.
“It is something that I guess I planned to do for a while now. At some point, I already knew that I wanted to apply for citizenship because Australia is the place that I want to live in permanently and it’s my home now.”
Although Sue has only lived in Hobsons Bay for a short amount of time, she said she’s really come to love the community and all it has to offer.
“Both of [my] children were born in this home, so I really call Hobsons Bay my home,” she said.
“It’s an area that I’m familiar with, I feel a sense of belonging here.”
As for Australia, it’s the culture and the people she loves the most.
“I feel like I identify more with the culture here now that I’ve lived here for a number of years,” Sue said.
“This is the lifestyle that I love. And I feel that Australian people are very kind, very compassionate, they’re very generous and polite.”
“It’s very easy to love Australian people and the culture here.”
