Maribyrnong council has launched a campaign to encourage residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Maribyrnong has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Melbourne.

Australian Department of Health figures show 56.9 per cent of Maribyrnong’s eligible population has received a first dose and 35.3 per cent has received a second dose as at September 5.

Mayor Michael Clarke said he had been vaccinated “for my friends, family and community”.

“By getting vaccinated, you are protecting your health and helping to protect your family, friends and community,” he said.

“We’re not safe until we are all safe.

“As more people get vaccinated, the more the community is protected, which brings us closer to doing what we love with those we love.

“We all play a part in battling this pandemic, not just our frontline workers.”

The council is inviting multicultural community groups to get in touch for support to spread the word.

“Supporting our culturally and linguistically diverse community is particularly important, given over 40 per cent of residents speak a language other than English at home,” Cr Clarke said.
