Acclaimed jazz musician James Morrison has been announced as the headline act for Last Night of the Proms in Williamstown.
Morrison starred last year at the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
He has played with some of the biggest names in jazz and blues, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and BB King.
Also taking centre stage in Williamstown will be the Western Region Concert Band, SingWest choir, Laverton Community Choir and local singer Rosa McCarty.
They will perform traditional prom tunes including Military March No.1, Land of Hope and Glory, Fantasy on British Sea Songs, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia!
Band vice-president Clare Perry said Morrison had performed five years ago at the Williamstown Proms and thoroughly enjoyed it.
“We’re a very high-quality community band within the Melbourne suburbs, so to be able to perform with people such as James Morrison and Leo Sayer and Christine Anu, as we have done in the past, is just a fantastic, amazing opportunity to be able to do that,” she said.
“James will be joined on stage by his two sons – Harry Morrison, who plays bass guitar, and William Morrison, on guitar … he’s also bringing his drummer, Patrick Danao.”
Ms Perry said the 18th annual event at Williamstown would be modelled on the British version.
“It’s an event where people in the audience can actually get involved … they can dress up, they can wave their flags, they can sing along and make noise and just have a great time,” she said.
Last Night of the Proms will be held on Saturday, October 13, from 7.30pm at Williamstown Town Hall.
