Western Bulldogs Community Foundation staff members are rolling up their sleeves to donate much-needed blood.

As part of the AFL Blood Challenge, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is welcoming AFL staff members to donate blood, plasma or platelets at centres across the city, including at a pop-up centre in Williamstown until Friday, September 23.

The inaugural AFL Blood Challenge is a friendly competition between industry colleagues from the AFL’s head office and AFL clubs across the country to see which team can give the most donations and finish on top of the ladder at the end of the season.

Western Bulldogs Community Foundation community health and wellbeing manager Alyce Vella said the group are committed to supporting community needs of the west of Melbourne and beyond.

“That’s why our team are rolling up their sleeves to donate blood as part of the Lifeblood challenge,” she said.

Lifeblood spokesperson Elle Giles said they are seeing the highest levels of cancellations and non-attendances alongside the highest hospital demand for blood products since 2013.

“We are seeing around 30,000 blood donors every week cancelling or rescheduling their appointments – that’s equivalent to filling VU Whitten Oval three times over,” she said.
