Labor has committed $2.3 million towards the construction of the Vietnamese Museum Australia in Footscray.

Announced on Friday, October 28, the support would build on previous support for the facility’s construction dating back to 2016.

Due to open in 2025, the facility would honour Vietnamese migrant’s journeys to Australia, as well as the Vietnamese community’s contributions to the multicultural identify of Australia.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Ros Spence said the facility would do more than just record a time in post-war history.

“It will provide Vietnamese Victorians with an opportunity to share and preserve their stories of migration to Australia,” she said.

Since 2016, Labor has allocated more than $6.8 million to the Vietnamese Museum Australia.

The centre has also received more than 280 artefacts towards its cultural exhibitions.

Footscray MP Katie Hall said the centre would allow visitors to gain a broader knowledge base of the history of the Vietnamese community in Australia.

“We are proud to support the construction of the Vietnamese Museum Australia to ensure people develop a deeper understanding of the Vietnamese community, their experiences and their significant contributions to Australia,” she said.

The 2021 Census data reflected that more than one in every 10 Maribyrnong resident has Vietnamese heritage, placing it as the most prevalent outside of Australian and English.
