Williamstown High School will get $1.3million if Labor is re-elected, the state government pledged last week.
Labor candidate for Williamstown Melissa Horne said the funding would enable the school to upgrade its year 12 study centre and complete the next stage of its Centenary Theatre complex.
The 304-seat theatre officially opened in 2017.
Principal Gino Catalano said stage two of the theatre would include instrumental music rooms, a band room, a green room, increased gallery space and a facility for VCE dance students.
“There’s only a handful of state schools that offer dance as part of VCE and by us having a dance facility we believe there’ll be demand from our students and even neighbouring schools to offer VCE dance in to the future, so that will be part of this performing arts centre of excellence,” he said.
“The study centre’s also something to be excited about – a purpose-built facility for our students.
“It’s like a rite of passage for students to get to take over this space.”
Ms Horne said the school was “at the heart of the community”.
“This is effectively finishing what Labor started in that the Williamstown High
School community have been planning
an upgrade to their year 12 study centre and to the next stage of their theatre complex,” she said.
“So Labor will invest $1.3million towards these exciting new plans.
“It’s been really welcomed by the school.
“By enabling them to complete their second stage, along with their year 12 study centre, it will be an asset for generations to come.”
