Schoolchildren at Laverton P-12 College decorated their school fence with poppies in honour of Anzac Day as they remembered the sacrifice of Diggers and strength in unity.

Principal Richard Jones said the students were asked to write on the poppy petals what Anzac Day meant to them.

They commented that it was remembering the landing at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, the soldiers who protected us, and trying to prevent wars occurring.

“There are three points about Anzac Day which I’d like students to think about,” Mr Jones said. “Firstly, the Anzacs were made up of many nationalities and were quite multicultural, including indigenous Australians.

“Secondly, is the idea of nation. People joined together to be stronger; together they knew they could protect our country.

“Thirdly, spirit: courage, loyalty, friendship, united together for the same purpose.

“Our school also has staff and students from all over the world.

“And together we are stronger than alone.”
