Laverton woman Tori Deluca has been enjoying her customised employment program at the Laverton Community Centre and is hoping it will land her a job in her dream field soon.
Living with a severe disability, Ms Deluca said she was devastated her local library shut down due to COVID.
This had been her first job and she struggled to find a new one since, but remains optimistic with the new skills she learns everyday in the program.
The program is run by Ability Works Australia, which operates under a four-phase approach that unpacks the passions of people with disabilities and aims to match them with their dream employer.
“The course is all about finding what I’m passionate about and what I would like to do as a job,” she said.
“Then I can try to find places where I can work and have a job.”
Some of Ms Deluca’s passions include reading books, arts and crafts and crocheting.
“I would love to work in a library, whether it be a public library or school library,” she said.
“I liked working with the books and the kids there as well as helping people find the books that they were interested in.”
So far Ms Deluca said she has found this course to be beneficial and is excited to finish at the end of the year.
“I have become more confident talking to people that I don’t know, I wasn’t really talkative but now I think I have come out of my shell.”
