Thousands of people gathered around Williamstown’s Cenotaph this morning as part of Anzac Day commemorations organised by the Newport RSL Sub-Branch.

About 2,500 people from far and wide assembled for the moving Dawn service, with local dignitaries, past and current serving members and navy cadets among those in attendance.

Retired Major Mark Bainbridge began the service with a welcome to country, which was followed by speeches from Williamstown MP Melissa Horne, Brigadier David Kelly (Chief of Staff AHQ) and a prayer from Reverend Elizabeth Murray (Holy Trinity Church) and Father Greg Trythal (St Mary’s Church).

Several local community organisations and schools were invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph, including members from the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, students from Williamstown North Primary School and Emmanuel College.

Following the Dawn Service, a Gunfire breakfast was held at the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, with egg and bacon rolls, a warm coffee and maybe a beer or two enjoyed by all.
