Lifesaving endurance skills on show

Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club came home with a mix of gold, silver and bronze from the Life Saving Victoria [LSV] endurance championships.

Held in Torquay on Saturday, October 22, the championships put the athletes skills and fitness to the test across a number of events, including two and four-kilometre beach runs, board races, one and two-kilometre swim races and six and 10-kilometre ski races.

Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club swept the masters women’s two-kilometre swim event, with Sally Leung, Sonia Budde and Ruth Patterson claiming first place, second place and third place respectively.

Other Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club representatives’ results included:

* Under 13 girls two-kilometre beach run – first place – Madigan Carroll;

* Under 12 girls two-kilometre beach run – first place – Mieke Pretorius;

* Under 13 boys two-kilometre board race – second place – Noah Chapple

* Under 13 girls one-kilometre swim – third place – Madigan Carroll;

* Under 13 boys one-kilometre swim – first place – Noah Chapple;

* Under 12 boys two-kilometre beach run – first place – Mackinlee Carroll;

* Open women’s two-kilometre swim – second place – Claire Hodgart; and

* Under 13 girls two-kilometre board race – second place – Madigan Carroll.

LSV aquatic sport acting manager David Potter said the skills on show highlighted the skills needed to save lives whilst the lifesavers were on patrol.

“The endurance championships are the ultimate test of our lifesavers’ fitness and skills,” he said.

“Sport serves not only as active training for our lifesavers, but is also highlights their dedication to lifesaving and their craft, with some of our athletes training daily in preparation for the summer sport season, meaning Victorians are in safe hands this summer.”
