It’s not every day a local business gets to help improve local roads.

Laverton North’s Alex Fraser Group got to do just that recently when the company was contracted to supply 60,000 tonnes of crushed product for the $6.7 million duplication of Dohertys Road between Foundation and Fitzgerald roads.

Alex Fraser managing director Peter Murphy said the company’s Laverton North asphalt plant and recycling plants had used nightshifts for the work to reduce the impact on local traffic.

“This has been a demanding job on a busy road,” he said. “At the end of the project, we have provided 14,000 tonnes of asphalt to pave 31,000 square metres of road and supplied 60,000 tonnes of crushed product.”

Wyndham council’s most recent traffic volume report shows that nearly 17,000 cars use Dohertys Road every day.

Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the duplication works were completed a month ahead of schedule.

“The finished product will significantly improve safety and reduce congestion and travel times,” Cr Barlow said.

“The duplication of Dohertys Road is a win-win situation.”

Dohertys Road will undergo further duplication and widening works in two sections – between Fitzgerald Road to Grieve Parade, and between Foundation and Palmers roads – as part of the state government’s planned $1.8 billion upgrade of Wyndham roads.
