Major road works beginning in Footscray

Major road works will begin for three weeks on Saturday, May 27, from Footscray Road, West Melbourne between Dock Link Road and Appleton Dock Road.

Motorists travelling between Footscray and Melbourne’s CBD will be required to take an alternate route beginning Saturday, May 27.

As part of the continuing West Gate Tunnel Project works, Footscray Road, West Melbourne will close citybound between Dock Link Road and Appleton Dock Road.

The works will run for three weeks beginning on May 27 to Friday, June 16.

The Department of Transport and Planning has advised drivers to allow up to 15 minutes extra travel time when using Whitehall Street, Dynon Road, Spencer Street and Dudley Street.

Heavy vehicles and port traffic should use Dock Link Road, Dynon Road, Spencer Street and Dudley Street instead.

For those who are not driving, route 220 buses will divert using Dynon Road, and will miss five stops.

There will be continued service changes within the CBD, including some missed stops and shortened services, for routes 216, 232, 234, 235, 236 and 237.

When the outbound lanes of Footscray Road re-open to traffic from 7am Sunday, May 28, there will be changes to the alignment of the traffic lanes, and a section of the walking and cycling path.

There will be no access to Dock Link Road from Footscray Road outbound.

Port and freight traffic should detour using Appleton Dock Road and Intermodal Way, or via a u-turn at the Linfox intersection.

The inbound road closure allows crews to continue building the elevated roadway over Footscray Road, while shifting the outbound lanes makes way for the construction of a new ramp connecting Appleton Dock Road to the West Gate Tunnel.

Passengers are encouraged to check the PTV website and allow extra time when travelling.
