Man arrested following alleged Altona aggravated burglary

An early morning burglary came to a dramatic end on Friday, July 29.

Altona Police officers used capsicum spray to apprehend and arrest a 34-year-old Reservoir man following an alleged aggravated burglary in Altona in the early hours of Friday, July 29.

Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson said police have alleged that the man gained entry to a McBain Street home shortly after 2.30am before stealing the keys to a Mazda SUV parked in the driveway.

“The offender has then allegedly attempted to flee the scene in the Mazda however Altona Police officers, in the area after receiving reports of a man sighted acting suspiciously, spotted the SUV reversing from the driveway,” she said.

“Officers boxed in the Mazda, which then crashed into the police van, along with the victim’s two other parked vehicles and the residential fence.

“During the incident, the offender has driven over a gas main in the front yard of the premises and eleven people from three neighbouring homes were subsequently evacuated.”

Leading Senior Constable Jackson said the Reservoir man was now assisting police with their inquiries.

“Two adults and two children home at the time of the aggravated burglary were not injured,” she said.
