Man arrested in Werribee

Police arrested a man in Werribee yesterday, following a series of burglaries and carjackings in Melbourne’s west and northwest in a 24-hour period.

Police allege a man armed with a knife held up a service station on Horsburgh Drive, Altona North just before 3.30am on Saturday and fled with cigarettes.

The same man is believed to have been involved in a carjacking on Raleigh Street, Essendon later that morning, during which a Subaru was stolen. No one was injured during the incident and the car has since been recovered.

About 1pm on Saturday, a second aggravated carjacking is alleged to have taken place outside a fast food restaurant on the Western Highway, Burnside.

In that incident, a man armed with a knife demanded the 62-year-old driver hand over his possessions before fleeing in his Holden Cruze, which is yet to be located.

About 12am on Sunday, police attended a house in Lyall Street, Werribee after reports that a man was armed with a knife.

A 40-year-old Melton man was arrested by members of the Critical Incident Response Team a short time later and taken to hospital under police guard.

No one else was inside the property at the time.

The man has been charged with 17 offences, including two counts of aggravated carjacking, armed robbery, obtaining property by deception, committing an indictable offence while on bail, assaulting police and driving-related matters.
