Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the stabbing death of a man in West Footscray on Saturday night.
Paramedics were called to Ashley Street, near the corner of Sunshine Road, after reports of an injured man just before 7pm.
When they arrived, those already at the scene were trying to resuscitate the man by performing CPR. He could not be revived.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, has not yet been identified.
His body lay on the road under a rail bridge near an entrance to Tottenham station.
The source said the man had been stabbed. Police said the exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be determined.
SES crews and a forensics unit were combing the area for evidence including the weapon used.
A source said there had been fears it was going to rain and wash away evidence.
On Saturday night, a constant flow of traffic drove past the spot where the man had collapsed on the road.
Trains bypassed Tottenham station as police examined the scene.
