Man on mobility scooter struck dead in Newport

An 84-year-old Newport man has died after being struck by a car while riding a mobility scooter on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Champion Road in Newport following reports the man was struck by a white Toyota Hilux about 12.45pm.

He was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

The driver of the car, a 27-year-old man, stopped at the scene to render assistance.

He was uninjured and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
