Man wielding weapons struck by police car at Altona

A man wielding an axe handle and knife has been struck by a police car at Altona overnight.

Police were called to a report of an assault in Lowe Avenue, on the north side of Civic Parade, about 10.40pm on Wednesday.

Victoria Police spokesman Adam West said officers on their way to the incident encountered a man carrying an axe handle and knife in Civic Parade.

“Officers attempted to negotiate with the man but were unsuccessful,” Leading Senior Constable West said.

“Police placed a cordon around the man and continued to attempt to negotiate with him until he ran at a police vehicle in Railway Avenue.

“He was struck by the police car and then walked off to Blyth Street.”

Some residents reported hearing gunshots but Leading Senior Constable West said bean bag rounds were used.

“Police again attempted to talk to the man and non-lethal options were used to subdue him,” he said.

“Police used a number of non-lethal options including bean bag rounds and a conducted-energy device.”

The man has been arrested and was taken to hospital for treatment.
