Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre swim teacher Joanna Yang has made a splash at this year’s Aquatics & Recreation Victoria awards.
She received the Swim Teacher of the Year award at the ceremony on Friday, September 2.
Ms Yang has been working at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre for the past 10 years, starting her journey as a lifeguard before finding her passion teaching others to swim.
She said receiving the award for her teaching was an “honour”
“This award means so much to me,” Ms Yang said.
“I have grown so much as a teacher over the past 10 years, learning methods and absorbing advice from all of the incredible teachers at MAC.
“This job is so incredibly rewarding, and it is amazing to watch my young students grow up by the pool.”
She said her favourite part about being a swim teacher was the moment when one of her students understands a new skills.
“When it clicks for them, it’s magical to watch,” Ms Yang said.
Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said the council was “proud” to have Ms Yang teaching Maribyrnong community members how to swim.
“As a former lifeguard, I know just how important swim school is for both infants and adults,” he said.
