Maribyrnong council releases draft budget

A 2.5 per cent rates rise for Maribyrnong ratepayers will help fund the $138 million budget proposed for 2016-17.

Maribyrnong Council on Tuesday night endorsed a draft budget that raises almost $91 million in rates and charges.

Key projects proposed for funding include completion of the $12.9 million Little Saigon Project and Saigon Welcome Arch, $8 million on council-owned roads, $4.6 million on footpaths and cycleways, $970,000 for the renewal of nine reserves and open spaces, $840,000 for the Footscray Hockey Club and $500,000 for tree planting.

The budget includes $36 million for capital works and infrastructure and would include completion of the Nicholson Street mall project in Footscray.

Council’s would cut it’s level of debt from $2.7 million, to $1.8 million by the end of the 2016/2017 financial year.

Maribyrnong pensioners will be eligible for a $181.70 rates rebate, the highest in Melbourne.

Mayor Cameron McDonald said the Council has a focus on ‘business as usual.’

“This budget allows us to continue the quality services and long term infrastructure improvements which our City has come to expect,” he said.

“We will continue funding to make our streets cleaner and safer, and our community spaces more enjoyable – along with maintaining our City as vibrant and livable for residents and ratepayers, businesses and visitors.”

Written submissions must be received by May 27.

The final budget will be considered for adoption at the Ordinary Council Meeting on June 14.
