Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay artists are encouraged to start preparing their entries for the 2023 Footscray Art Prize.

Applications for the biennial visual art prize are opening on Monday, October 3

Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said anyone from across the country is welcome to apply.

“Footscray is a thriving cultural and creative hub with an enviable reputation as a centre of arts and culture in the inner west, which has been reflected in the success of the Footscray Art Prize to date,” he said.

Footscray Community Arts artistic director Daniel Santangeli said the major winner will receive $20,000, a doubling compared to previous years.

“Independent artists in Australia have been hit hard by COVID-19,” he said.

“Many experienced a loss of work and struggled to access government support schemes.

“By doubling the value of the major prize, we wanted to recognise that support for artists is most acute now in this time of recovery.”

Other available prizes include the Local Acquisition Prize for $10,000, the Residency Artist Prize for $2000 and the Young Artists Prize, which will provide $500 each to the primary and secondary school winners.

Entries will close on March 20, 2023 and winners will be announced in July 2023.

Shortlisted works will be on display at a exhibition at Footscray Community Arts from July 15, 2023.
