Hobsons Bay mayor Matt Tyler is urging residents to avoid single-use plastics this month.
Cr Tyler is taking part in Plastic Free July, a global movement which challenges people to ditch single-use plastics to help reduce plastic pollution.
Cr Tyler said he has replaced single-use coffee cups with a keep cup for the month.
“None of us are perfect, but we can play our small part in this global initiative. If we commit to one single act in July that does not use plastic, such as using a keep cup, it will make a big difference when combined with everyone else’s single act,” Cr Tyler said.
“It’s not about boycotting plastic altogether. Just choose one item to avoid. Taking the challenge will help you find great alternatives that can become new habits forever.”
A range of events and initiatives are taking place across Hobsons Bay to encourage people to avoid single-use plastics this month and in the coming months.
