All primary school students in the Maribyrnong community now have active paths to follow on their morning journey to school.

In partnership with local schools and the Department of Transport and Planning, (formerly known as VicRoads), council announced the addition of four new schools to its Active Paths program.

The four schools, St Monica’s Primary Footscray, St John’s Catholic Primary Footscray, Wembley Primary Yarraville and Footscray Primary Footscray complete the Maribyrnong sector.

The Active Paths program was designed to encourage parents and students to ride, walk, scoot or skate their way to school .

The colourful and informative decals have been placed on footpaths to guide students and parents on the way to school, designed to be a fun way for children and their friends to start their school day, while providing the necessary daily physical activity.

For parents who drive to school the program encourages parents to park a bit further away from the school and use the path for all or part of their journey, helping reduce traffic around school zones while promoting a positive lifestyle.

Maribyrnong Mayor Sarah Carter said she was excited about the program’s expansion.

“The Active Paths program is a fantastic way for parents and children to incorporate daily physical activity. It promotes a healthier lifestyle, fosters a sense of community, and reduces traffic congestion around our schools,” she said.

As part of Maribyrnong City Council’s Road Safety Program, parents and students walking to school are reminded to exercise caution when crossing roads and to always use designated pedestrian crossings or traffic lights.

It is crucial for parents to be aware of their surroundings, particularly when using electronic devices or listening to music.
