More traffic disruption from tunnel project

Inner west motorists will again have to deal with disruptions as the long-awaited West Gate Tunnel Project nears completion.

From Monday, August 18, the West Gate Freeway will be reduced to three outbound lanes for the installation of drainage and kerbing between Williamstown and Millers roads to be completed.

To undertake these works the Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp and the Millers Road and Grieve Parade outbound exit ramps will also be closed from August 18.

In preparation, all outbound lanes of the freeway will close between Williamstown and Millers roads from 10.30pm on August 17 to 5am on August 18.

The works will be completed with a full outbound West Gate Freeway closure for asphalting, with all outbound lanes and ramps between Williamstown and Millers roads to close from the night of August 29 to 5am on September 1.

Acting chief executive of Major Road Projects Victoria, Paul Roth, thanked motorists for their patience and said they’d notice the difference once the works were completed.

“These works will deliver upgraded lanes, critical road facilities and create safer road conditions for Melbourne’s west,” said Mr Roth, adding that the same applied to the entire tunnel project.

“The West Gate Tunnel Project will provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, widen the West Gate Freeway from eight to 12 lanes and take 9000 trucks off local roads.”

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow up to 90 minutes extra travel time.
