Mortgage stress assistance expanded

Victorians struggling with their mortgage repayments can now access a free service to help them stay in control of their finances.

The state government this week announced the expansion of Mortgage Stress Victoria (MSV), a service that provides expert legal, financial, and social work support to homeowners, both in-person and remotely.

Beginning as a pilot program in Melbourne’s western suburbs, MSV will now be available statewide to assist homeowners at at any stage of mortgage stress.

In announcing the expansion Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes said extra help for those in mortgage stress was needed because a house was more than just a roof over someone’s head.

Through Mortgage Stress Victoria, we are supporting more vulnerable Victorians to stay in their homes,” Ms Symes said.

“Mortgage Stress Victoria offers more than just financial advice—it’s a lifeline for people’s wellbeing, their futures, and their peace of mind.”

Those seeking help from MSV must live in their mortgaged primary residence, own only one property, have a household income of $75,000 or less, or be affected by family violence.
