A Maidstone couple has escaped without injury after their home was blasted with gunshots overnight.

The man and woman were asleep inside their Yellow Box Street home when they were woken by the sound of gunfire as a number of shots were fired into their house about 11.35pm on Sunday night.

Several rounds hit the front door and outside of the home and almost 20 bullet shells and shotgun casings were found in the yard and in neighbouring parkland.

Forensic investigators wearing masks spent Monday morning combing the crime scene for clues.

Shortly after the shooting incident, police arrested a 26-year-old Altona Meadows man driving at 86km/h in a 60km/h zone on Smithfield Road in Kensington.

Officers searched the car and found a shotgun, cannabis and ice.

Police originally suspected the man was connected to the Maidstone shooting, however they no longer believe he is linked to the incident.

Any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
