Music stars coming to Newport RSL

Newport residents are encouraged to dig deep in support of Melbourne’s homeless as part of a fundraising event which will see musical talent from across the country meet at the Newport Returned and Services League [RSL] sub-branch.

The Newport RSL is hosting the charity event on Sunday, July 10 from 6pm at its sub-branch headquarters at 24-28 Market Street in Newport.

Sub-branch treasurer and past president Ian Nicholls said the proceeds from the event will contribute to the efforts of the Melbourne-based organisation Backpack Bed for Homeless

“With the bitterly cold winter being experienced and the uncomfortable conditions facing the homeless, Newport RSL is again encouraging local community involvement and is supporting this event,” he said.

German-born Australian country music vocalist and guitarist Cash Backman will be the headline act, with Devil’s Brew, Chris Dawes, Steven Heath, Terry Dean, Alan Bowles, Mick Hamilton, Ian Nancarrow and more set to grace the stage during the evening.

Backpack Bed for Homeless has so far provided more than 36,000 swags to those sleeping rough since first forming in 2007.
