Musician Michael Zammit is launching his debut CD featuring his favourite songs in support of a charity supporting families of children with autism. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.
What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?
I was born and brought up in Altona and have lived in Altona and Altona Meadows all my life. I have owned and operated Airwaves Recording Studio for 31 years in Altona Meadows.
What do you like about Altona?
I love the community and the multicultural diversity we have. The cafes, the beach, the venues and, most of all, the people that I grew up with that are still in the area.
What would you change?
There is really nothing I would change. I just love it here.
What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery and why?
My favorite local cafe would have to be Pier 71. They have amazing food and service, and two of my dear friends own it.
Can you tell me about your passion for music?
I have grown up around music. My late father and uncle were in the music industry for years. I knew from a young age that this was my path in life and am lucky enough to follow that dream. I have worked in it all my life and now my two boys are heading in the same direction. It’s been an amazing journey.
Can you tell me about your debut CD?
The recording of my debut CD, Michael Zammit @ 50, was inspired by my late father. He and mum encouraged me to follow my dream, and after being 30 years behind a mixing console I decided to get behind a microphone and record an album of songs of my favorite artists. The artists that I’ve recorded on the album are artists like Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, Bon Jovi, Creedence Clearwater Revival and David Essex. David Essex sent me a message congratulating me for recording his song, Hold me Close, and commending me on my chosen charity for my CD launch, being Autism Advisory and Support Service. I’ve got a couple of dear friends of mine with children that have autism and I just kind of thought that would be the one for me because I’m pretty close to these guys and just watching their children grow up … obviously with autism there’s been a bit of a challenge for the families and the kids as well.
What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
I love carpentry and very much look forward to new projects.
