Where’s Wally?

All over Yarraville Village it seems.

The iconic yet elusive book character has suddenly appeared overnight, his trademark red and white-striped tops and blue pants covering more than half a dozen of the council’s parking meters across Yarraville’s shopping strip.

Locals taking photos with the Wally-themed parking meter covers on Wednesday have been left scratching their heads as to who may be responsible.

While they were not put in place or authorised by Maribyrnong Council, Star Weekly understands the council has no plans to remove them.

The parking meters have remained in place despite being non-operational for more than three years, after being introduced amid great controversy in 2015.

The meters were vandalised a number of times before even being switched on and a 61-year-old Yarraville man was charged over a violent incident at a council meeting in which councillor Grant Miles was punched in the head and Cr Nam Quach was body-slammed to the floor and kicked.

The meters were switched off only months after being introduced and there are no current plans for them to be returned to use, despite the council foregoing more than $8 million in revenue since the parking fee freeze in central Footscray and Yarraville.
