The new Aircraft Station pedestrian and cyclist underpass in Laverton is now open as part of the Aviation Road level crossing removal project.
The new underpass allows commuters to easily access the Aircraft Station platform from the north and south, and has been fitted with natural light filters and CCTV cameras.
Accessible ramps at both ends of the station and centrally in the underpass have also been installed.
During the second phase of the project, 100 new and upgraded car parking spaces at Aircraft Station will be built as part of the Car Parks for Commuters Program.
In order to complete the final stage of car park works, the station’s car park will be closed from 9pm Sunday March 6 to 10am Thursday March 10 for asphalting, with alternative parking available at Laverton Station.
Crews will also install a secure bike cage, with cyclists able to access a new 26 space bike storage facility, as well as 37 bike hoops at the station by the end of March.
Finishing and landscaping works will continue over the next couple of months, and will see including more than 350 new trees planted around the station forecourt.
Member for Altona Jill Hennessy said the new pedestrian and cyclist underpass will allow safe and effective community access to the station.
“It’s exciting to see the last stage of the project take shape at Aviation Road, thank you to our great community for their patience while we complete these important works.”
The Aviation Road level crossing was removed in September 2019, by moving the road onto a new bridge over the railway line.
