Altona North residents and community members now have another place in their backyard to learn.

The Williamstown Community and Education Centre [WCEC] officially opened the Altona North Community House at 7 Plover Drive in Altona North on Tuesday, October 4.

Fully owned by WCEC, staff have been hard at work fitting out the centre with more than $100,000 worth of equipment, including a split system, IT equipment, furniture and laptops.

WCEC chief executive Dr Mark Brophy said the first class was held in the centre on Tuesday, October 4, with two English language classes now underway.

“About 30 per cent of WCEC students live in, or near, Altona North but travel to Spotswood or Williamstown for classes,” he said.

“Until now, there was no Community Training Organisation or Learn Local in Altona North.

“This void is now filled.”

Mr Brophy said the centre would start hosting computer classes at the centre soon.

Mobil and Hobsons Bay council committed $20,000 each towards the centre, while Bendigo Bank, the Altona Lions Club and Toyota each provided small sponsorships.
