New augmented reality artwork experience in Footscray

By Molly Magennis

A new self-guided augmented reality public art project has been launched in Footscray.

64 Ways of Being, developed in partnership with RMIT University, will allow residents and visitors to the Footscray CBD to view a series of artworks scattered across the area via an app on their smartphone.

RMIT worked with local community members on the project, who shared their own personal stories of Footscray.

Each artwork links to each other and provides an interactive journey, activating public spaces with the touch of a button.

The artworks are accessed through physical markers, like graphic signs on a wall or posts near a footpath, that trigger artworks created specifically for the area.

The art will also feature soundtracks from local Melbourne musicians such as Ajak Kwai and Allara Briggs, and narration from Elders and local figures including N’arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM, Uncle Larry Walsh and Samuel Gebreselassie who share stories and memories about the area.

Madden Square, Nicholson Street and next to the Grand Theatre are just some of the locations where the artworks will be featured.

Mayor Anthony Tran said Footscray is full of rich culture and history that bring vibrancy to the municipality.

“This exciting new initiative demonstrates how by merging art with community spaces and technology residents and visitors can connect with this diverse cultural hub in a new way,” he said.

“This new interactive art experience is sure to extend and enhance the visitor experience and I hope locals and visitors alike will enjoy this experience and installation while it is here.”

To view the art, residents should download the free 64 Ways of Being app on their phone and follow the on-screen instructions. They should also be sure to have a pair of headphones on hand to access the audio aspect of the experience.
