Maribyrnong council has outlined the next step in broadening and improving its library services, with the council approving its draft library plan for 2023-2025.

At its meeting on Tuesday, April 18, councillors passed a motion to endorse the release of the Draft Maribyrnong Libraries Plan 2023-25 for community and stakeholder feedback.

Maribyrnong councillor Anthony Tran said libraries had become more than just a place to borrow books.

“They are really about community, about the people,” he said.

“It’s now a place of gathering, it’s now a place of gathering and more importantly, it continues to become a place of innovation.”

The plan outlined four strategic themes to frame the implementation of the plan, being safe and welcoming spaces, learning and engagement, discovery and creativity and a future-ready workplace.

The council received about 4000 comments from more than 1300 people following a community survey in October 2022.

Cr Bernadette Thomas said targeting increase in membership and developing infrastructure were particular highlights of the future-focused plan.

“The range of programs that we currently have…are excellent,” she said.

“They’re just continuing to go from strength to strength.”

The two-year plan would on the immediate development of library staff and the way in which programs, collections and services were delivered to support immediate community needs.

Feedback closes at midnight on Wednesday, May 10.
