A new community house will be opening up in Hobsons Bay, providing another space for those to access training, develop skills and socially engage with others in the municipality.

The Williamstown Community and Education Centre (WCEC) Inc will be opening their third community house in Altona North, after securing a venue at 7 Plover Drive at the Millers Junction development.

This community house will be fully funded by WCEC, unlike the existing Joan Kirner House and Spotswood Community House which are leased from Hobsons Bay City Council, and the Victorian government.

The venue will initially be fitted with a couple of classrooms and a kitchen, and will eventually be able to deliver English Language classes in term three, and computer classes in term four.

Community members will also be able to rent out an upstairs office space for classes, programs or initiatives.

WCEC chief executive Dr Mark Brophy said about 30 per cent of students who attend WCEC actually live in or near Altona North, but have to travel to the other two locations to attend classes.

“We also currently deliver several English Language and computer classes at Altona North Library to over 40 students who live in this area,” he said.

“These classes can now be transitioned to the new house. Until now, there was no Community Registered Training Organisation or Learn Local in Altona North. This void is now filled.”

The new community house is expected to be launched in July this year.
