The Yarraville Specialist Development School community has taken the first step towards the construction of a new junior learning centre and community hall.

Education Minister Natalie Hutchins visited the school last month to mark the launch of the construction project.

As part of a $5.5 million state government investment, construction has been slated to be completed on June 30, 2023.

Assistant principal Davina D’Menzie said it was an honour to host Ms Hutchins and show her the plans for the new spaces for the increased capacity of 95 students.

“These spaces will further support our students to regulate by having new playground equipment and various options for movement breaks,” she said.

“The multipurpose hall will provide opportunity to have more physical education, host community events and provide a space for out of hours care and holiday programs.

“The new primary learning area will encompass a better layout for our students to learn independence.”

Ms Hutchins said the new facilities would create a modern and fit-for-purpose space for staff and students.

“It was incredibly exciting to visit the students and teachers at Yarraville SDS to officially kick off their huge upgrade,” she said.

“We’re giving families with special needs children the choice of what works best for them.”
