Williamstown’s cricketers will soon receive brand-new facilities to practise their skills, with new cricket nets on the way thanks to a $300,000 commitment from the state government.

Williamstown MP Melissa Horne celebrated the investment with Williamstown Colts Cricket Club president Steve Willis, vice presdent Hanni Harb and life member Marty Humphries on Friday, June 24.

She said the cricket club is a local institution which will benefit directly from the new facilities.

“I’m so proud that the Andrews Labor Government is stepping up to deliver up to $300,000 for new cricket nets at Greenwich Reserve,” she said.

“Our local sporting clubs are the backbone of our community and providing the facilities they need will encourage more people to get involved in local sport, stay healthy and stay connected.”

Mr Willis said the new nets will include a secure and covered storage space for the club’s equipment, as well four or five nets.

“I would like to recognise the state government and Melissa Horne for their help,” he said.

“We are hoping this will create the impetus for the pavilion works.”

Mr Willis said the club is working with other sporting clubs and Hobsons Bay council to deliver a project to construct a new pavilion at Greenwich Reserve, complete with changerooms for women and men and fit-for-purpose clubrooms.
