A new children’s playground, barbecue area, off-leash dog area and viewing platform will be open to the public at the G.J. Hosken Reserve following works.

The official opening will begin with a National Tree Day planting event from 10am until 12 noon and then an opening ceremony until 2.30pm on Sunday, June 19.

Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek (FOLKC) president Geoffrey Mitchelmore said the day will be a way for the local community to enjoy the new facilities and learn about ongoing FOLKC works and initatives.

“I hope that you can join with us to help celebrate this wonderful initiative: one which will benefit all visitors to the Kororoit Creek corridor in the future,” he said.

“There will be on stage entertainment, free food, drink, and information about the Kororoit Creek and developments that are occurring along and adjacent to the Creek environmental corridor.

“It’s a great thing for the west.”

Williamstown MP Melissa Horne will help open the $2 million works, which will include, as a result of community consultation:

* The addition of a multicourt

* Separate fitness stations

* Additional play equipment; and

* More seating within the reserve.

Mr Mitchelmore said the project is the result of a partnership between Hobsons Bay council and the West Gate Tunnel Community Grants Program and FOLKC.

Other partners involved in the opening include Melbourne Water, Toyota, Greater Western Water, the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, Nestle, Planet Ark, Greening the West and Cedar Meats.

Those wishing to take part in the National Tree Day event are encouraged to register on the viewing platform from 10am.
