A two-storey childcare centre in the midst of residential homes has been approved on appeal to the state’s planning tribunal.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal granted Basic Element Pty Ltd a permit to build a centre for 122 children at 32-34 Maddox Road in Newport. Twenty six basement parking spaces are provided.
Hobsons Bay council last August refused the proposal on grounds including the centre being inconsistent with a general residential zone, that it was an overdevelopment, would unreasonably impact residential amenity and had inadequate parking.
Residents also objected saying it would lead to overlooking, overshadowing, noise, on-street car parking and traffic.
VCAT member Geoffrey Rundell said a child care centre was acceptable in a residential area.
“I am satisfied that the childcare centre before me would be highly likely to serve local needs,” he said.
The centre will operate from 6.30am-7pm Monday to Friday.
