The Newport RSL Sub-Branch will receive a much needed funding boost, enabling them to complete essential structural works in order to stay up and running.
The Sub-Branch will be receiving $36,000 as a part of the $1.13 million Veterans Capital Works Grant Program, aimed at helping communities and organisations improve facilities and services.
The RSL has had it tough the last few years, closing down for a period of time in 2018 because of financial mismanagement.
RSL treasurer and past secretary Ian Nicholls was finally given the keys back to the venue in March 2019, and with the help of a team of dedicated volunteers, has been working hard to get the place up and running again.
The money will be used to repair the RSL’s floor, which in its current state, prevents the RSL from using its kitchen due to safety reasons.
Mr Nicholls said the flow on effects of finally being able to fix the floor will be immediate.
“It will enable us to further provide services that we otherwise have been unable to provide,” he said.
“[It] will mean that we will be able to get the kitchen done, to renovate the kitchen will also enable us to provide meals for veterans as well, which we’re unable to do at the moment.”
He said the hard work and the commitment of the many volunteers has been crucial in getting the RSL back to its former glory.
“Without volunteers we wouldn’t be here, it’s as simple as that,” he said.
Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the Newport RSL is a pillar of the community and was delighted to announce the news.
“I was honoured to join the Newport RSL Sub-Branch to commemorate ANZAC Day, and am pleased to be supporting this investment,” she said.
“The contribution of our volunteer charity RSLs is immeasurable and I am excited to see the delivery of this funding.”
