Newport: School tackles bullying

Newport traders and a real estate agency have banded together to combat bullying in schools.

The Newport Traders Association and Village Real Estate Newport have co-funded an anti-bullying and cyber bullying program for years 5 and 6 pupils at Newport Lakes Primary School.

The program, teaching students to stand up for what they believe in, will be run by youth-led organisation Project ROCKIT (PR).PR was founded by sisters Lucy and Rosie Thomas, and involves workshops aimed at preventing bullying and empowering students with strategies.

Principal David Moss said the program was especially relevant, with children spending so much time online.

He said the school wanted to support its students and reinforce the responsibilities they had when using the technologyn now available at their fingertips.
