Speeding motorists were caught out by police in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay during the Easter weekend safety operation, with 35 speeding offences recorded.

Operation Nexus ran from 12.01am on Thursday, March 28 to 11.59pm on Monday, April 1, in an effort to crack down on dangerous and reckless behaviour during a traditionally high-risk period.

In Hobsons Bay, police detected 10 speeding offences, three unregistered vehicles, one drink driving offence, five disqualified drivers, three mobile phone offences , one unlicensed driver and two offences of disobeying signs/signals, one seatbelt offence and four impoundments.

In Maribyrnong, there was one unregistered vehicle, one drink driving offence, three disqualified drivers and one unlicensed driver.

Statewide, more than 8000 traffic offences were detected, with almost 4000 Victorians caught speeding.

On top of this, 378 impaired drivers were taken off the roads for getting behind the wheel with alcohol and drugs in their system.

Three people died over the long weekend, including two separate motorbike accidents where it’s believed the riders lost control of their bikes.

A third man was killed while standing near his vehicle near Morwell.

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said they were concerned a number of people would drive impaired over the Easter period and sadly that became a reality.

“And to see people combining alcohol and speed is terrifying, putting not only their lives but the lives of others at serious risk,” he said.
