Oily train tracks in Tottenham

Emergency services were called to the Tottenham railyards on Monday night after reports of a freight train leaking significant amounts of oil.

Olive oil.

Firefighters arrived at the scene in between West Footscray and Tottenham stations at about 10pm on 27 October where they found a train carriage containing approximately 22,000 litres of liquid, leaking large quantities onto the tracks.

Police and Ambulance Victoria paramedics were also present as Fire Rescue Victoria’s (FRV) specialist hazmat tried to identify the substance and stem the leak.

The incident was deemed under control just before 1am on 28 October when the hazmat technicians concluded the liquid was not hazardous.

A check of the train manifest revealed the liquid to be olive oil which was being transported from Perth to Melbourne on a rail freight service operated by Pacific National.

A spokesperson for Pacific National said the leak was found by crew members performing routine checks and that the carriage has since been isolated at the terminal where it will be inspected.

After some minor disruptions, freight and passenger rail services returned to normal by 3.30am on Tuesday morning.
