Paid parking date announced

Paid parking conditions along the Altona esplanade will come into effect on May 1.

Hobsons Bay council announced on Wednesday, that starting May 1,195 previously free parking spots between Sarros Street and Millers Road will now become a paid parking area.

This includes 129 angled spaces closest to Pier Street, which will be subject to three-hour parking restrictions between 8am to 8pm, while the remaining 66 spaces will be all-day parks.

All Hobsons Bay residents are eligible to apply for parking permits which will allow residents to park for free in ticket machine areas and residents are also entitled to one visitor permit per household, time restrictions will still apply.

The time restrictions will be introduced on residential streets near the beach between November and March, to ensure local residents have access to parking on their street.

The proposal for the paid parking meters was initially announced during a council meeting on April 12, 2022.

Hobsons Bay Mayor, Councillor Tony Briffa said the reasoning behind the fees received from visitors would be put back into the community.

“The introduction of parking meters and parking restrictions in Altona will be of benefit to the Hobsons Bay community,” she said.

“For traders, the changes will help provide a turnover of visitors to the beach resulting in more customers,” she said.
