Pet owners are being reminded to renew registrations for their furry friends to avoid being hit with hefty fines.

Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said Victorian laws required that all dogs and cats must have their registrations renewed with their local councils by April 10 each year or face fines of about $300.

They must also be implanted with a microchip for identification purposes.

“Registration fees fund a range of important animal services including after-hours rescue of injured animals, pet lost and found services, following up inquiries about nuisance or wandering pets, enforcing standards in animal businesses, and running local programs to educate pet owners about their rights and responsibilities,” Cr Zakharov said.

Maribyrnong has used some registration revenue to upgrade Martin Reserve in West Footscray. The off-lead dog park upgrade includes a fenced area for smaller dogs, a hard-wearing surface for more vigorous play and new seating.

Other improvements include a dog training zone with log edges and rock scrambles, improved grass and tree planting.

The Maribyrnong registration fee for both cats and dogs is $165 or $55 if reduced-fee conditions are met. Half-price pensioner discounts are available.
