Hobsons Bay resident Alicia King has celebrated her idea for Hobsons Bay council to reimburse the cost of purchasing reusable female sanitary products being among the 13 approved for funding through the council’s Community Pitch program.

She said she came up with the idea to assist people struggling with the rising cost of living.

“It’s also about reducing the use of single-use menstrual products,” Ms King said.

Other successful projects funded as part of the 2022-2023 council budget included reducing membership fees at the Hobsons Bay Toy Library, encouraging cafes and the community to utilise reusable cups and converting grassed nature strips to native ‘habitat strips’ through supplying information and locally indigenous plants to residents.

Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said this year’s program welcomed community members to vote on their favourite ideas.

“Not only did these ideas come directly from the community but they were also given the tick of approval by the community,” he said.
