Plan to sell Altona Gate Primary site

Plans are afoot for a former Altona North school site to be sold for a residential development of up to four storeys.

The Department of Education and Training wants the former Altona Gate primary school site in Blackshaws Road rezoned to ‘residential growth’, allowing for housing of up to four floors.

The 2.4-hectare site takes up a block bounded by Blackshaws Road and Misten, Rosala and Glade avenues.

Department spokesman Alex Munro said consideration was given to projected population and student growth before any school site was declared surplus.

“An independent technical report commissioned to determine the right zone found that … residential growth zoning was most suitable,” he said.

“Before any site is sold, the department ensures demographic factors and community views are considered, and the current rezoning process is part of public consultation.”

An advisory committee has been appointed to make a recommendation on the proposed rezoning of the land, paving the way for its sale.

Written submissions can be made until May 27. And an information session will be held at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona from 6.30pm on May 4.

As the rezoning issues arise, the department is facing opposition to selling part of the Altona P-9 College site in Grieve Parade for residential development.

But the department has confirmed it will retain the site of the former Eastona Park primary in Collins Avenue, Altona North, allowing for a school to be built if population grows.
