Plans released for Flemings Pool at Altona

Hobsons Bay council is calling for community feedback on a planned viewing platform at a popular Altona beach swimming spot.

Flemings Pool, at the end of Millers Road, is named after the Fleming family that, in 1915, removed rocks to create a swimming hole.

Last year, the council built a 45-metre stormwater pipe encased in a revetment and placed rocks at the site to stop erosion.

As reported by Star Weekly, talks were held between councillors, residents and traders in response to calls to remove the rocks and restore the beach to a sandy state.

Ward councillor Tony Briffa said the council was working hard to preserve the swimming spot.

“Council has developed a concept design option that is based on our previous community engagement on Flemings Pool, as well as on a recent piece of research about its very unique marine climate,” Cr Briffa said. “The … design has some great features, such as a tiered seating area that will also serve as a wave deflector to help protect the seawall.”

The platform is expected to be built by summer.

Information sessions will be held on Thursday, August 23, 4-6pm in Meeting Room 3 at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre and on Saturday, August 25, 9-11am in Fraser Reserve, corner of Millers Road and Esplanade, Altona.
