A peace pole has been placed at Newport Lakes Primary School by the Earlyact club.

Earlyact is a community service club for kids, sponsored by the Williamstown Rotary Club.

Peace poles are displayed as a silent vigil for peace, and aims to remind the community to think and act in the spirit of peace.

This year, Rotary is celebrating its centenary in Australia, with 100 clubs marking 100 years of rotary service.

The clubs will be distributing 100 peace poles to schools around the country, with each pole labelled from one through to 100.

Newport Lakes Primary School are now in possession of pole number 51.

Williamstown Rotary representative Damien Hynes said it was great to celebrate 100 years of Rotary with the younger generation.

“As a Rotarian looking at these young Earlyact students and their discussion on peace gives me confidence for the world they will move into,” he said.

“Rotary along with the youth of today, working towards peace for the future – how good is that.”

The Williamstown Rotary Club sponsored the peace pole, which has the universal peace message – “may peace prevail on Earth” – displayed on the side.

The message is written in four languages, one on each side panel, with Newport Lakes sharing the message in English, Arabic, Indonesian and the local Indigenous boon wurrung language.
