Police are appealing for public assistance as they continue to investigate a string of grass fires in Maribyrnong.

The first incident occurred on New Year’s Day, after a large grass fire was reported near the fence line of a former munitions factory on Raleigh Road about 12.55pm.

The large fire damaged and destroyed several nearby buildings and a number of houses had to be evacuated.

The nearby area was at risk of reigniting for several days after the incident.

A second grass fire occurred at the rear of the factory along the Maribyrnong River about 6.55pm on Monday, January 10. The fire was deemed suspicious.

Police and emergency services were then called to a third fire at the facility along Cordite Avenue about 11.44am on Sunday, January 16.

A week later, police were called to a fourth fire at the same address about 4.40pm on Sunday, January 23.

Police are investigating whether the incidents are linked and are appealing for anyone who has witnessed suspicious activity in the area recently to come forward.

Police have been working closely with the site owners who are increasing security presence on site and enhancing CCTV in the area.

Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
