Police are seeking public assistance to help identify a burglar who attempted to break into a house in Footscray last week.

It is believed the burglar and another man got out of a silver Volkswagen Golf on Shepherd Street and broke into a car stealing sunglasses and other personal items just before 7am.

One of the men, who was wearing a high-vis top, then attempted to break into a house on the same street before driving away empty handed.

Police believe the same men drove to Droop Street in Footscray later that morning and stole a multi-tool kit from a car.

It is also believed they also attempted to steal a car in Lindenow Street in Maidstone the same morning.

The first offender is considered to be European, 190cm tall with brown eyes and brown hair. He was wearing an orange hi-vis hooded jumper, black pants and runners.

The second offender is considered to be Caucasian, unshaven with a solid build, and was wearing a straw hat and dark T-shirt.

Investigators have released images and CCTV of two men who may be able to assist with their inquiries.
